12 Tips To Balance Vata This Autumn

Do you know how I know when it’s Vata season? I become inspired with creative energy. I have so many ideas running through my mind right now that I don't know which one to do first. It's both exciting and confusing at the same time. Yep, it's definitely Vata season. 

Vata is made up of the elements of air and space and governs all movement. Autumn and early winter are the seasons when these elements are most dominant in the environment, as well as in our bodies and minds. Remember in Ayurveda, what we experience in the environment, we also experience in our bodies. Think cold, wind, dryness, irregularity, crackling leaves, crackling lips etc.

When Vata is in balance the body and mind can be incredibly creative, easily adaptable to external changes and able to juggle multiple tasks. However, when Vata is out of balance, we can experience nervousness, fear and confusion. 

Here are some symptoms of when your Vata is too high:

Physically: Dry and rough skin, cracked tongue, cold hands and feet, constipation, indigestion, gurgling in stomach, stiff joints, lower back pain, poor circulation, ringing ears, dry hair, dry cough, shallow breathing, hyperactivity leading to becoming easily fatigued and tired.

Mentally: Anxiety and worry, nervousness, insomnia, panic attacks, lack of concentration and inability to complete tasks.

12 Tips to find balance:

  1. Establish a daily routine to create regularity in your life. waking up at the same time each morning and eating your meals at the same time each day is a good place to start. 
  2. Eat only warm, cooked, seasonal foods e.g. porridge, soups, dhals and root veggies.
  3. Avoid rough, dry, cold and light foods e.g. raw veggies, raw apples, corn chips.
  4. Drink warm water and herbal tea throughout the day. Try to avoid caffeine, it's too drying. 
  5. Never skip meals.
  6. Focus on regular daily bowel motions. Use kitchen herbs to enhance digestion and elimination e.g. Ginger, garlic and turmeric.
  7. Eat your biggest meal at midday as this is when digestion is at its highest.
  8. Establish daily body massage using heating oil such as black sesame seed oil. Don’t leave it on for more than one hour unless applying it to the feet before going to bed. this promotes a sound sleep.
  9. Avoid excessive exercise.
  10. Focus on your breath – deeply and regularly.
  11. Daily meditation to calm and stabilise the mind.
  12. Give plenty of nourishment with plenty of warm cows milk and ghee.

Regularity, warmth and grounding are the key to balancing Vata, so remember to take time out to rest and nourish the body and mind.
